Abstract

After reviewing one experiential learning cycle, this article explains a seven-step mechanism of change (previously referred to as the “black box”) for adventure therapy. It summarizes several pathways through that mechanism from the input of assorted adventure elements to the outputs of their respective adventure benefits. The remainder of the article describes the facilitator’s role in modifying each of the many mediators in between the seven steps and the multiple moderators outside of the overall mechanism in order to achieve the greatest gain for participants engaged in adventure therapy.
